Merenguitos

I know there are already so many sweets going around for Halloween...but I have one more sweet to add to the mix... ( :

One with Latin flavor...(I remember eating these as a kid)

This is a perfect recipe to celebrate Dia de los Muertos. All natural ingredients that are easy to find and easy prep (does take some time in the oven so give yourself plenty of time to bake).

Older kids can have fun making different shapes...

Latin Merenguitos
16 pieces
Ingredients
1 ½ cup honey
2 cups egg whites
2 drops lemon juice
3 cups sugar
Preparation
1. Place the egg whites and lemon juice in a stand or hand mixer with whisk attachment and whisk at high speed for 1 minute. Turn the speed down to medium and sprinkle in all of the sugar while machine is running. Add the honey to the egg whites, increase the speed to high and whisk for 3 minutes or until stiff peaks form.
2. Place the meringue into a bowl. At this point, you can add food coloring if desired by simply adding a couple of drops to mix until you have reached the desired color. Mix food coloring into the meringue.
3. Place the meringue in a pastry bag with a star tip and pipe 16 assorted shapes onto a 12" x 17" baking sheet with parchment paper.
4. Bake at 200 - 225° Fahrenheit for about 2 hours or until completely crunchy.
5. Store in an airtight container.

Our visit to the cemetery

to celebrate Dia de los Muertos was so much fun.
Audrey and I ate sugar skulls, visited all the beautiful decorated altars, did lot's of shopping and shared lunch together.

I bought a gorgeous vintage peasant blouse and little flower stud earrings for myself.

Audrey came home arms full: hair barrette, puzzle, book and Frida Kahlo doll.

All were local artists and vendors with such unique beautiful items, it was so hard not to want everything.

You guys might be able to answer this question...
Is it rude to walk over someones headstone/grave?
I seriously could not get Audrey to walk around them, she must have thought they were stepping stones because she would try to jump from headstone to headstone (the ones that lay flat on the ground).
I hope no one there was bothered by it, I can't imagine any dead person being bothered by Audrey playing....

(Flower in hair, treat bag and outfit ready)

How have you been celebrating/getting ready for Dia de los Muertos and Halloween?

Jeremiah has playoff game two this morning. We will be getting ready in just a bit to head out.

This team has worked so hard this year (they're undefeated) and really just given it their all.... can you tell I'm a bit nervous?

We are usually it's about having fun around here, but with a team that's worked so hard and come such a long way like this I can't help but think of winning.

My stomach, like every other parent will be in knots, and we will be holding on to each other just like our last playoff game I'm sure...

a visit to the pumpkin patch and frozen yogurt is in store post game. ( :

I am so thankful my family is safe, healthy and happy. I hope all of you are safe, healthy and happy this weekend. Enjoy your families....

VERY IMPORTANT

Families in beautiful El Salvador are in need of your help, it's been days of rain and floods, no clean water, destroyed homes, destroyed crops, deaths and lost loved ones.

Please take some time to read about what's going on and pass it on to a friend. Please help, a small donation goes a long way. It needs our attention, the media has not covered this like it should.

so fancy

Audrey is taking a nap at the moment, something she hasn't done for the last two weeks.
It's quiet. Nice actually.

I can actually blog.

Life has been busy, as always.

Sleep has been treasured, and because of this, Iv'e been neglecting this blog. Sorry.

This morning Audrey and I went out for coffee. Our order: latte with soy, and a warm milk with whip cream on top.

We then thrifted a bit, picked up a new puzzle and a some books, including one of my favorite books as a child, The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes, I can't wait for Audrey to be a bit older so I can read this to her. Have you read?

Our thrifting ended with a tantrum over wanting to bring home a hamster home with an exercise wheel and the bedding next to it. Ofcoarse my excuse for not buying was that there was no hamster inside, but that didn't really matter.

My body has been super soar all day, I started my circuit training classes again and even thinking about the word muscle hurts me all over. ( :

Tonight Kip and I get to dress up. Crown City Hardware was voted best hardware store in Pasadena by Pasadena Weekly and we get to celebrate at the Best of Pasadena party. We are big on shopping local and family owned so this is special news for us.

Ok, off to get fancy....

(it's a rainy day here in LA...family movie night is in store for us tonight :)

African Cats takes you to the African savanna to witness the heartwarming stories of two lion prides and a brave cheetah family.

 I love animal stories...

The film was shot over the course of two and a half years using state of the art camera equipment, it's beauty is breathtaking. After seeing a film like this you have such a deeper appreciation and respect for the wild. Such an important film for all of us to watch.

to the park

(the house is a mess)

I worked all weekend...  today I slept.

I really need to do laundry, and load the dishwasher, and think about what we will have for dinner tonight.

Right now, I don't want to.

Jeremiah (basketball in hand) asked if we could walk to the park after he and Audrey finish their snack.

I almost said... " but there is so much to do..."

Then, I realize, there will always be so much to do

We are off to the park now. To enjoy the warm sun before it decides it should set.

Dishes can wait. Laundry can wait.

And dinner, dinner might be late ....
