Brunette

As I brushed Audrey's hair I whispered...

You are beautiful ,  you are smart, you are funny, you have beautiful long hair...just like Rapunzel.

Audrey responded, "Rapunzel cut her hair, then she like me" (referring to the movie Tangled after her hair is cut and her hair turns brown).

I quickly answered.. yes Rapunzels hair is cut and turns brown, a beautiful brown just like yours.

This made me think.

Originally I was comparing her hair to Rapunzels long blonde hair.

Why would I compare her hair to Rapunzels long hair?  Audreys hair is not blonde.
Is this what I want Audrey to think is beautiful? Long, blonde hair? Why would I compare her hair to anyone at all?

I'm not quite sure, why I said this.  Maybe because I know how much Audrey loves Rapunzel,
or is this what I think is beautiful?

This has been on my mind... I want Audrey to love herself just the way she is.

It's made me realize what big part I play with her self image. And how important it is for me to let her know how special she is.

Now I'm looking for a brunette Rapunzel doll with no luck so far.

This also makes me think.

what a great post. I know what you're talking about. I often catch myself saying things like that all the time.

But Rapunzel is a character who is blonde. You can compare your daughters beautiful hair (it is gorgeous!) to Rapunzel's long beautiful hair without them being the same brown color. That's another lesson: That things that are different can both be wonderful!

carlybananas...
you are right, I did compare her beautiful brown hair to Rapunzel's beautiful brown hair... which is what Audrey related her hair to Rapunzels.
It left me thinking how maybe I shouldn't compare at all...but like you said acknowledge that everyone is different and beautiful and that we really shouldn't compare each other...

You are such a good mother. I know where you're coming from and I am absolutely sure that you are teaching her to love herself by noticing those little things that play a big role in our lives. I have tons of things to learn from you! =)

I know what you mean Marce. Like Carly says, Rapunzel's hair is just blonde but she has beautiful hair like Audrey. What great advise she posted! We are all different and that's beautiful too!

I know the feeling. I've notice that when ever I look for a doll for my little one, I tend to go for those that have dark hair and not because my little one has dark hair (she has dark blond hair), but because her mama does. And I want her to learn to appreciate the beauty in all colors, shades and shapes.

I have boys, nephews, and one niece. Often I catch myself telling her how beautiful she is, then I quickly realize I should have told her how smart she is. I don't want her to get the message that beauty is all that matters.

Now I'm wondering if the original Rapunzel had blonde hair? It might be worth the read. ;)

I love that you compliment your daughter so freely...and that you think about the words that you say so intentionally. You are a wonderful mother.

I would love to see more dolls and princesses and cartoon characters with glasses.

This is an excellent post and you're an excellent mother for thinking about this, (though I don't think you said anything wrong at all.) I hope you find her a doll that resembles her.

I saw this short documentary years ago you may be interested in:
